The latest episode of The Brian and Joe Radio Show is recorded and ready for release on Tuesday, March 16, 2010.

We would like to dedicate this edition of The Brian and Joe Radio Show to our friend Don McPherson who passed away in 2009. To know Don was to appreciate his enthusiasm for the outdoors, specifically the Southern Appalachian Mountains and our National Parks. Don was able to transfer his love of nature to everyone close to him, especially his son Sam. Throughout his life he hiked sections of the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia and would have loved to hear our interview with Laurie Potteiger of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy….

Sticking with our new format we again feature two topics and reserve a block at the end of our program for our featured contributor. This week we started off with Laurie Potteiger of The Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Many people are no doubt familiar with the scenic Appalachian Trail which stretches some 2,178 miles from Mount Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia. However, not as well-known is the work it takes to maintain this piece of our national heritage and how some of us more casual hikers can enjoy it. Laurie helps us fill in the missing pieces.

In the second part of the program we welcome clinical psychologist and author Anne Paris. Anne has become an authority in helping people get in touch with their creativity through her research and work in treating and counseling artists. Her book Standing at Water’s Edge: Moving Past Fear, Blocks, and Pitfalls to Discover the Power of Creative Immersion has been very well received and it is a privilege to have her share some of her expertise and insight with our audience. One of the most striking revelations during our conversation is that creativity doesn’t necessarily have to come from solitude, but can come amidst the turmoil and commotion of daily life.

In the final segment of this week’s show we are joined by featured contributor Katy Crossen. Katy, a self-proclaimed “foodie”, stops by the studio to talk about spring eats. Apparently it is time to take the brie cheese out of our refrigerators and replace it with artichokes, fiddlehead ferns, asparagus, avocado, and mustard greens.

We would like to thank our guests this week: featured contributor Kelly Connell, Villanova Political Science Professor Matthew R. Kerbel, and featured contributor C.M. Tomlin. Topics include pornography addiction, new media and politics, and Oscar picks.

Up first is Kelly Connell with her expert insight and opinions into porn addiction. Many believe the problem of pornography addiction is hidden in America but is also on the rise because of easy and ubiquitous access to graphic content on the Internet. Kelly concedes that porn can cause problems for individuals but like many sex educators is not certain whether it can truly be classified an addiction. She points our listeners to the American Association of Sexuality Educators for more information.

In the second part of the show we seek some understanding of the relationship between new media and politics. Professor Matt Kerbel, a noted expert and the author of Netroots: Online Progressives and the Transformation of American Politics, enlightens us on the increasing use of new media to promote a social and political agenda. He believes this is a relatively new phenomena, but one that started during the Clinton Presidency and in some ways harkens back to the yellow journalism predating the Gilded Age. It is a fascinating subject and one sure to inspire thought and to provoke further discussion.

The final segment of this episode is devoted to the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. Featured contributor C.M. Tomlin takes a break from his busy routine as a copywriter and content provider to many blogs, and gives us his picks for best movie, as well as best actor and actress. The Oscars are certain to be even more entertaining than usual this year as there are twice the usual number of films nominated, and the ceremony will feature two hosts (Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin). Nonetheless, there is growing consensus that Avatar and Hurt Locker will be the big winners…

Good afternoon fans of The Brian and Joe Radio Show! We just finished recording the latest edition of our show which will be broadcast on WVQC in Cincinnati, tomorrow at 12pm EST. This week we discussed lessons learned from the current recession. To help us better understand the topic we were joined by Thomas J. Fox, the Community Outreach director at Cambridge Credit Counseling Corp., a non-profit with the mission of helping people regain control of their finances. Besides his work as an advocate and educator for the financially troubled, Thomas J. Fox is also an author, the creator of several informational DVDs, a contributor to various publications, and hosts his own weekly radio program called Money America on WAIC 91.9 FM in Springfield, MA. Throughout the hour, Mr. Fox talked about the role of credit counselors in helping to educate people and to turn their finances around. He offers a great deal of insights and makes many important observations.

In the Featured Contributor section of our show, Courtney Brooks joins us to talk about foreclosures and the steps people facing a foreclosure should take. Courtney is a lawyer with more than five years experience in practicing real estate law. As a volunteer she has helped many people and will be joining us regularly with important information and tips from a legal perspective. One of the many things we learn from Courtney about foreclosures is not to ignore the notices. And if you can’t afford legal representation, check with The Legal Aid Society in your area.
